On a totally unrelated note..

..yesterday I got Conor Oberst’s latest contribution to the world, Outer South, from his current band, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band.

Mystic Valley

I hadn’t listened to any of their stuff until now, and I have to say I am very, VERY impressed. Its completely different from the music of Bright Eyes (Except maybe for some of the songs on Cassadaga).  Thats not saying I don’t like Bright Eyes, they’re one of my favorite bands, but its nice to hear something slightly more upbeat from Oberst’s signiture voice. Its very folky, and quite bluesy at times. The comparison’s of Oberst song writing to Bob Dylan have never been more fitting..

You can listen to Nikorette for free here:

Happy listening.

So I had to jump some fences but…

…I went to have a look around the Umhlanga Ridge New Town Centre development, and took some photos. Unfortunately my camera’s battery ran dry, and I had to take the rest the pics with my crappy little camera phone, but you get the idea..

Its really exciting to see how much thought has been put into this development, that’s been slowly taking shape over the last few years. The project is facilitated under a broad set of aesthetic guidelines, which creates a cohesive and elegant urban landscape. You can read about the Architectural and Corporate Identity guide lines in the freely available release notes from Moreland Developers.

“Worldwide the trend is to discovering a
new urbanism—an emphasis on exquisitely
designed, safe, convenient and extremely
well-managed cities that nurture human
culture and dignity while being powerful
economic generators and job creators.
Umhlanga Ridge New Town Centre is enthused
with this vision and focuses, on one
hand, on a public environment of quality
and distinction while exhorting private developers
to surpass these high ideals with
their individual contributions to the whole.”

I especially like how pedestrian orientated the town planning is..

And as always, the indigenous planting is a huge improvement on the previously popular and totally out of context palm trees.

Similarly, large existing trees have been preserved.

All in all, very exciting stuff..

BTW. Would’ve been super amped on that zigzag ramp/stair set up if I hadn’t seen it somewhere else before.. Tried to find it in my Stumble favorites but I couldn’t. Still pretty rad though.

Kids with Guns

I finally watched News Movie last night. I’d always seen the cover in video stores and thought it was another crappy Waynes Brothers’ movie.. But turns out its made by the good people at The Onion. As you can imagine I was too stoked to discover this.

I’ve always loved reading The Onion.. But what I didn’t know, is that there’s also an Onion Video Blog, which broadcasts episodes of “news” much like the news desk  scenes in the movie. You can find the whole 1st season here.

I watched a couple great ones like this..

A very important issue indeed, and it would seem, I’m definately not playing NEARLY enough violent video games! I mean, what if the Apocalypse came, and I was trapped inside an old house, under siege from zombies. Would I really know how to get to the top floor to turn on the force fields?

Happy shooting!

I’d seen this kind of thing on loads of blogs I’ve read, especially the ones I stumble upon, so I thought it might be a useful thing to add to my posts.. So I did a Google search, and surprisingly, its not as easy as it seams.. For wordpress.com blogs that is anyway.. Theres a lot of code you need that gets really complicated.. And I’m not a HUGE fan of code.

But then I found this guy. He’s written a program called GetSocial. Its really easy to use, quick to download, virus/add ware/blah blah free, and totally FREE to use. (But if you’re a nice person you can donate wit PayPal..)

You can download it like I did from here:

http://hillelstoler.googlepages.com/GetSocial.zip

Its really self-explanatory so I’m honestly not even going to bother.. All I’ll say is: Enjoy the extra traffic!!

Ilchester Pics

I’ve got this long running project for my Technology course at varsity, for which I have to do a PBS (practical building study) of a residential project from the ground up.. So all year I’ve been visiting this site kinda near my house and taking photos, and doing sketches, and all the rest, from foundation stages all the way up to this point..

I took these photos yesterday. Unfortunately, when I go in the week I kind of have to wait for the builders to pack up and leave so the lighting’s not too great in some of the shots, but its all good..

I just love building sites. There’s something about all the textures, and the colours, and the sense of something to come that just gets me so amped. This looks to be rather a pretentious, ugly big house.. But I think its quite beautiful at this stage.

Brick and rubble
Junk

Maybe it was just the Bon Iver in my ears, the half dark or the site itself, but there’s something of an atmosphere all of its own to a place like this..

Awesome Free Stuff! Yay!

July 8, 2009 Leave a comment

I went to Gateway today, and, after buying some new shirts and stuff, the guilt of listening to aKing’s Dutch Courage as much as I do without actually owning the album caught up to me, and I bought it.. Stoked!

It was kinda reduced too, which was great, but as I was standing at the counter, handing over the cash, the guy reaches behind the counter and slips this little paper bag or something into my packet, and he says “Yeah, you get a free magazine with that!”

Sweet! So I’m stoked.. I open up the bag that looks like this..

SC1

Yeah, thats Francois Van Coke, Age 7..

..and its not a magazine at all.. Its full of a whole lot of random (and AWESOME) stuff, like postcards..

SC1 001

SC1 002

..and stickers..

SC1 007

SC1 006..and this rad little book all about how to start a band, in afrikaans..

SC1 005

..with these great little illustrations..

SC1 004

..and the most insane posters I’ve ever seen..

SC1 008

That’s Wynand from Van Coke Kartel

SC1 009

And Jax Panic

..Yeah. and it all came in this super sick packaging, like little envelopes and stuff.. With cool stuff like this..

SC1 010

SC1 011

..printed on.

So basically I’m super stoked right now! So much awesome in one little A5 bag!!

Now I must return to my guilt free, aKing listening pleasure. Damn I love this album! Easily the best local recording I’ve ever heard as far as I’m concerned. Can’t wait to hear the new one!

My pretty little scribblings

July 6, 2009 1 comment

Just a couple of pages from my notebook.. I tend to write very erratically, and its nice to have a little rough page to jot my ideas down on. The downside is of course, that its often really hard to find a particular song or idea I’m looking for when I want to come back to it, and I often forget to write down the chords with the accompanying lyrics and that kind of thing, but hey.. C’est la vie.
