uMkumbane Mixed Use

October 17, 2009 1 comment

Final presentation for my current design was yesterday, which means a little more sleep and a whole lot less stress for me.

Stoked!

I’ve got a couple of little changes to make before portfolio at the end of the year, but otherwise I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

The brief called for a Mixed Use building (residential/commercial/offices) in uMkumbane, Cato Manor, which is quite a poor area in Durban. The building was meant to act as something of an acupuncture into the area, a catalyst for further development of a positive urban environment.

It was generally quite a theoretical project, which was super rad! Some theory reports here and here.

And now for some pretty pictures..

Stix!

My mom came home today with these super rad little plastic chop stick type things called Rookie Stix. They’re for people who can’t quite use actual chop sticks..

Now sushi and I get on very well, so I’ve had a fair bit of practice with those little guys, but for people who haven’t these are super rad. I thought they were just generally a pretty rad design!

They’ve ever got these rad little grippy bits at the end. Nice one!

Now I just need something Asian to eat!

197 Florida Road

August 15, 2009 1 comment

My first (design) hand in for this term was yesterday. The project was an art gallery and professional on Florida Road. We were given a little park just opposite Spiga d’Ora as our site and told to use “femininity” as a basis for our concepts. It was a really fun project to do, and I’m pretty stoked with my building.. Presentations on Monday though, so not too sure how my lecturers will react, but crits have been going well..

Anyway.. Here are some pretty pictures.

So I had to jump some fences but…

…I went to have a look around the Umhlanga Ridge New Town Centre development, and took some photos. Unfortunately my camera’s battery ran dry, and I had to take the rest the pics with my crappy little camera phone, but you get the idea..

Its really exciting to see how much thought has been put into this development, that’s been slowly taking shape over the last few years. The project is facilitated under a broad set of aesthetic guidelines, which creates a cohesive and elegant urban landscape. You can read about the Architectural and Corporate Identity guide lines in the freely available release notes from Moreland Developers.

“Worldwide the trend is to discovering a
new urbanism—an emphasis on exquisitely
designed, safe, convenient and extremely
well-managed cities that nurture human
culture and dignity while being powerful
economic generators and job creators.
Umhlanga Ridge New Town Centre is enthused
with this vision and focuses, on one
hand, on a public environment of quality
and distinction while exhorting private developers
to surpass these high ideals with
their individual contributions to the whole.”

I especially like how pedestrian orientated the town planning is..

And as always, the indigenous planting is a huge improvement on the previously popular and totally out of context palm trees.

Similarly, large existing trees have been preserved.

All in all, very exciting stuff..

BTW. Would’ve been super amped on that zigzag ramp/stair set up if I hadn’t seen it somewhere else before.. Tried to find it in my Stumble favorites but I couldn’t. Still pretty rad though.

Awesome Free Stuff! Yay!

July 8, 2009 Leave a comment

I went to Gateway today, and, after buying some new shirts and stuff, the guilt of listening to aKing’s Dutch Courage as much as I do without actually owning the album caught up to me, and I bought it.. Stoked!

It was kinda reduced too, which was great, but as I was standing at the counter, handing over the cash, the guy reaches behind the counter and slips this little paper bag or something into my packet, and he says “Yeah, you get a free magazine with that!”

Sweet! So I’m stoked.. I open up the bag that looks like this..

SC1

Yeah, thats Francois Van Coke, Age 7..

..and its not a magazine at all.. Its full of a whole lot of random (and AWESOME) stuff, like postcards..

SC1 001

SC1 002

..and stickers..

SC1 007

SC1 006..and this rad little book all about how to start a band, in afrikaans..

SC1 005

..with these great little illustrations..

SC1 004

..and the most insane posters I’ve ever seen..

SC1 008

That’s Wynand from Van Coke Kartel

SC1 009

And Jax Panic

..Yeah. and it all came in this super sick packaging, like little envelopes and stuff.. With cool stuff like this..

SC1 010

SC1 011

..printed on.

So basically I’m super stoked right now! So much awesome in one little A5 bag!!

Now I must return to my guilt free, aKing listening pleasure. Damn I love this album! Easily the best local recording I’ve ever heard as far as I’m concerned. Can’t wait to hear the new one!
