I think I’m in love

October 6, 2009 3 comments

So I just found out Hayley Williams, from Paramore is only 20. I think I have a chance.

Hayley, if you’re reading this,

.

I love you!

Ok, enough silliness.. Back to work, Matt Costa and the growing of my beard.

Hmmm.. Part two

I’m really struggling to resolve some plans for Monday right now, so I’m procrastinating pretty badly. Hence a little bloggage.

I’m really starting to miss PTA now. I don’t know why. I suppose after spending a week in such a creative, fun, different environment with loads of awesome people, coming back to the same old deadline orientated, design production line that varsity seems to be right now just feels like Sinai.

I just want to feel like I’m doing something worth while.

I think about the kind of things the people who presented papers last week are doing: social housing in Accra, creative arts centers in Kinshasa, Urban Agriculture projects in Johannesburg and do-it-yourself development mixed use buildings in Amsterdam. Architects and anthropologists Heinrich Wolff, Dick Van Gameren, Joe Addo, Liz Ogbu, Hein de Haan, etc, etc, just blew my mind. This is what architecture has to contribute to society! Not green roofed mansions one on top of each other in Mount Edgecomb on Zimbali, or art galleries on Florida Road.

Or maybe I’m just in a bit of an idealistic mood right now.

Well here’s a taste of what I’m rambling on about. A Day Laborer Station presented to us by Liz Ogbu of Public Architecture, the first of these structure is to be build sometime in the new year. (More info here)

The Day Labor Station, a project of Public Architecture, is a simple, flexible structure that can be deployed at these informal day labor locations. It is a sustainably-designed project that utilizes green materials and strategies and exists primarily, if not completely, off-the-grid. It provides a sheltered space for the day laborers to wait for work as well as greater community amenities and resources. Our design is a responsive one, addressing the needs and desires of the day laborers themselves, as our clients. As such, the structure will be flexible enough to serve in various capacities, including as a meeting space or classroom.

Pretty awesome really. Things like this really make me want to be an architect.. But right now I don’t know if I can be bothered. I think I just need a break. Maybe I’m just missing some people/someone.

Sigh.

On another note: I’ve been listening to the new Paramore album this week. Pretty awesome stuff actually. Give it a listen..

I Know There’s a Better Way

August 6, 2009 Leave a comment

I wrote something new a little while ago and recorded it the other day..
(Thought I’d upload it today, Since its Hiroshima Day.)

I’m pretty happy with it. It’s even got a little Zulu bit in the second verse. Yay!

I’m still not entirely happy with my recording though. I’m still getting major background noise from the PC, but I suppose for rough little demos it’s ok. I tried messing around with overdubbing some extra layers of vocals, but otherwise no extra digital stuff. Just guitar and vocals.

So yeah.. Keen to hear what people think..

On a totally unrelated note..

..yesterday I got Conor Oberst’s latest contribution to the world, Outer South, from his current band, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band.

Mystic Valley

I hadn’t listened to any of their stuff until now, and I have to say I am very, VERY impressed. Its completely different from the music of Bright Eyes (Except maybe for some of the songs on Cassadaga).  Thats not saying I don’t like Bright Eyes, they’re one of my favorite bands, but its nice to hear something slightly more upbeat from Oberst’s signiture voice. Its very folky, and quite bluesy at times. The comparison’s of Oberst song writing to Bob Dylan have never been more fitting..

You can listen to Nikorette for free here:

Happy listening.

Ilchester Pics

I’ve got this long running project for my Technology course at varsity, for which I have to do a PBS (practical building study) of a residential project from the ground up.. So all year I’ve been visiting this site kinda near my house and taking photos, and doing sketches, and all the rest, from foundation stages all the way up to this point..

Gang nail truss

I took these photos yesterday. Unfortunately, when I go in the week I kind of have to wait for the builders to pack up and leave so the lighting’s not too great in some of the shots, but its all good..

I just love building sites. There’s something about all the textures, and the colours, and the sense of something to come that just gets me so amped. This looks to be rather a pretentious, ugly big house.. But I think its quite beautiful at this stage.

Brick and rubble
Junk

Maybe it was just the Bon Iver in my ears, the half dark or the site itself, but there’s something of an atmosphere all of its own to a place like this..

Awesome Free Stuff! Yay!

I went to Gateway today, and, after buying some new shirts and stuff, the guilt of listening to aKing’s Dutch Courage as much as I do without actually owning the album caught up to me, and I bought it.. Stoked!

It was kinda reduced too, which was great, but as I was standing at the counter, handing over the cash, the guy reaches behind the counter and slips this little paper bag or something into my packet, and he says “Yeah, you get a free magazine with that!”

Sweet! So I’m stoked.. I open up the bag that looks like this..

SC1

Yeah, thats Francois Van Coke, Age 7..

..and its not a magazine at all.. Its full of a whole lot of random (and AWESOME) stuff, like postcards..

SC1 001

SC1 002

..and stickers..

SC1 007

SC1 006..and this rad little book all about how to start a band, in afrikaans..

SC1 005

..with these great little illustrations..

SC1 004

..and the most insane posters I’ve ever seen..

SC1 008

That’s Wynand from Van Coke Kartel

SC1 009

And Jax Panic

..Yeah. and it all came in this super sick packaging, like little envelopes and stuff.. With cool stuff like this..

SC1 010

SC1 011

..printed on.

So basically I’m super stoked right now! So much awesome in one little A5 bag!!

Now I must return to my guilt free, aKing listening pleasure. Damn I love this album! Easily the best local recording I’ve ever heard as far as I’m concerned. Can’t wait to hear the new one!

My pretty little scribblings

July 6, 2009 1 comment

Just a couple of pages from my notebook.. I tend to write very erratically, and its nice to have a little rough page to jot my ideas down on. The downside is of course, that its often really hard to find a particular song or idea I’m looking for when I want to come back to it, and I often forget to write down the chords with the accompanying lyrics and that kind of thing, but hey.. C’est la vie.
